REFLECTION

*Experience

Through our exploration of the cultural sensitivity, I gained insight into the symbolic meanings of different types of kimono and their patterns. Our group discussions led us to select Japanese ghost culture as our project theme, deepening our understanding of supernatural beliefs and folklore in Japanese society. Our trip to Osaka immersed us in Japanese culture, where we explored Yokai-themed snacks, museums, and temples, and conducted interviews that provided valuable insights into Japanese folklore. Our collaborative effort in creating the Yo Bento prototype exemplified the power of teamwork, commitment, and effective coordination, resulting in a successful and enriching educational journey marked by advancement and triumphant achievements.

*Observation

Engaging in discussions with my groupmates about Japanese ghost cultures has provided diverse perspectives and interpretations, leading us to evenly distribute tasks and plan our project effectively. Our journey through Osaka and Kyoto in Japan was marked by clear communication and tolerance, revealing the interconnectedness between folklore and societal norms in shaping Japanese beliefs about the supernatural. Through meticulous observation and analysis, we uncovered the delicate balance between tradition and modernity in Japanese culture. Our exploration into design inclinations, such as kawaii and minimalism, proved instrumental in understanding market preferences, with the bento box emerging as a standout product due to its visual charm and cultural significance. Despite challenges in material sourcing and color scheme selection, our perseverance and adaptability, coupled with effective task management, propelled us forward, resulting in a successful outcome that strengthened our collaborative bonds.

*Findings

Our research focused on the impact of supernatural beliefs on Japanese society, revealing how these beliefs serve as a lens through which cultural anxieties, historical traumas, and societal values are expressed. We also explored how ghost cultures influence various aspects of Japanese life, from architecture and urban planning to entertainment and tourism. Through experiential learning, interviews, observations, and survey data, we discovered the captivating effect of infusing snack delights with yokai and Japanese folklore elements, showcased in a bento box arrangement. This blend of cultural themes resonates with audiences both domestically and internationally, highlighting the expanding fascination with Japanese customs and beauty. Our project journey emphasized the importance of cultural authenticity and sensitivity in product development, demonstrating how cultural elements can bridge geographical gaps and promote intercultural comprehension. Despite challenges, our cohesive teamwork and dedication propelled us towards success, underscoring the significance of resilience and collaboration in achieving objectives and fostering a rich learning experience for all involved.
