Briefing :

The objective of this assignment is to apply Scott McCloud's theory on transitions to create a digital triptych, comprising three panels: one before, one during (climactic turning point), and one after a significant event. Each panel will represent a different transition type from McCloud's theory.

Referencing Scott McCloud's analysis of transitions in "Understanding Comics," you will select one panel before and one panel after the climactic turning point, surrounding a panel representing the turning point itself. Each panel will exemplify a different transition type, creating a digital triptych that showcases various narrative transitions.

  • Review Scott McCloud's transitions: moment-to-moment, action-to-action, subject-to-subject, scene-to-scene, aspect-to-aspect.
  • Select one transition type for each of the three panels: before, during (climactic turning point), and after the turning point.
  • Identify specific moments or elements in the narrative that align with the chosen transitions.
  • Create a digital triptych with three panels that clearly illustrate the chosen transitions.
  • Use any digital medium (illustration software, graphic design tools, etc.) to craft the panels.
  • Ensure coherence and narrative flow between the panels, capturing the essence of the transitions selected.
  • Submit the completed digital triptych via the designated platform.
  • Include a brief explanation for each panel, detailing the chosen transition and its significance in the narrative context.
  • Ensure that each panel distinctly represents its respective transition type.
  • Understanding and application of Scott McCloud's theory on transitions in creating the digital triptych.
  • Clarity and effectiveness in using each transition to depict the sequential narrative.
  • Coherence and visual storytelling across the three panels.
  • Artistic execution and presentation of the digital triptych.

Submission deadline for the completed digital triptych is at the end of Week 11.

TASKS

Rationale :

This exercise is based on the previous exercise we do. Here is the link for the previous exercise.

Due to I already describe all the story of Bloody Mary in the animation before therefore I decide to create a story that why the girl wants to summon the Bloody Mary.

I use same main character in the first and third panel and let the girl stay at the same composition to let three panel can be connect together. The transition I use is ‘Scene-To-Scene’.

1st Panel (Before the climax) :

  • Describe the reason that main character choose to find Bloody Mary.
  • Main character has face to the bully case.

2nd Panel (Climax) :

  • Main character summon the Bloody Mary.
  • Bloody Mary appear in the mirror.

3rd Panel (After the climax) :

  • The girls who bully the main character dead because of the Bloody Mary.

  • The scene got a lot of blood to let audience think of Blood Mary.

Sketches :

After I decide the transition and the story I want, I start my sketches. I sketch it on the paper and send it to Mr. Hafiz to have a feedback.

Sketches 3 is the suggestion of composition that given by Mr. Hafiz based on my original sketches. Therefore, I decide to create my artwork based on this composition.

Panel 3 : The last panel has describe a little bit more about what will happen after Bloody Mary appear which is fulfill the summoner’s wish.

My digital triptych assignment has meld traditional folklore with contemporary digital artistry. It is an invitation of offering a dynamic and cohesive exploration of her mythos. All panels has been designed by using Adobe Illustrator.

REFLECTIONS

*Experience
Through this exercise, I have learn different type of transition in story telling. Although the image is totally different, through the transition that suitable, audience also can understand the story with limited image. When we try to tell a story through some picture, we no need to drew everything, we can just draw the information that is important and the audience also can get the story that we want to tell. Besides that, through this exercise I also more used to the tools of Adobe Illustrator and developed a new style of draw the illustration.

*Observation
I found that transitions is very important when we try to describe a story in limited page. Within different type of transitions, we can explore different type of story telling. The combination of story and transitions can be a lot, it depends on how creative we are.

*Findings
I have explore my new upper limit through this exercise. Like what I think before, I have developed a new style of drawing and also the ways of story telling. My skills of using Adobe application also got improve, I have learned a lot of things through this exercise.
