TASKS

I have choose the Bloody Mary as the urban legend that I use because I don't know much on the urban legend.

Rationale :

The enduring fascination and widespread awareness of the infamous Bloody Mary urban legend make it the perfect candidate for a minimalist editorial illustration in a digital media publication. Its simplicity and iconic status lend themselves perfectly to a minimalist approach, creating a visually striking representation that transcends cultural and generational barriers. Sprinkling in subtle animations, such as flickering lights or a chilling reflection in a mirror, adds an interactive dimension to the illustration, captivating the audience and enhancing their engagement. With its universal appeal and knack for evoking suspense and intrigue, this legend is a natural fit for captivating online audiences through minimalist design and subtle animations.

Moodboard :

Moodboard

Picture above has shown my moodboard of this artwork which is include my references, sketches and rationale.

Based on the research I did, Bloody Mary is a urban legend that talking abouta legend of a ghost, phantom, or spirit conjured to reveal the future. She is said to appear in a mirror when her name is chanted repeatedly. The Bloody Mary apparition may be benign or malevolent, depending on historic variations of the legend. This urban legend is from western country and all the artworks that related to Bloody Mary have a similarity which is Bloody Mary is blonde hair, therefore I decide to follow this similarity so that audience can know that this is Bloody Mary when they first saw my artworks.

The ways to summon the Bloody Mary is repeatedly chanting her name into a mirror placed in a dimly lit or candle-lit room. The name must be uttered 13 times or other specific number. Due to Bloody Mary is a urban legend that related to mirror, I decide to create a artwork which is related to mirror and candle. Therefore, I have find a similar artwork that shows how to draw the reflection in mirror and also the prefer patterns of mirror.

After I do all the research, I start to sketch my artworks.

Sketches 1

Sketches 2

This sketches is sketch by using procreate on Pad therefore its does not looks very tidy. I decide to make an animations that shows the ways to summon the Bloody Mary. To let this artworks can be more related to Bloody Mary, besides of element of mirror and candle I also add the shapes that looks like blood at the top.

After I done my sketch, I have send the sketch to Mr. Hafiz. Based on the feedback that given by Mr. Hafiz, I have proceed to next step.

Progress 1

Progress 2

I draw the outline by using the pen tool. After this, I color it by using solid color. I didn't choose gradient color because I think my artworks is enough complicated, if I use gradient the artworks will looks a bit messy.

Progress 3

Progress 4

Picture above has show my artwork after coloring. Next, I start to animate it in Photoshop.

Progress 5

Based on the instruction of Mr. Hafiz, I only use 6 frames to do my animation.

Outcome 1

Outcome 2

I have create 2 different version which is outcome 1 fade to blood and outcome 2 fade to black. Based on the feedback from Mr. Hafiz, I have choose outcome 1 as my final outcome.

REFLECTIONS

*Experience
Through this exercise, I have learn how to create a gif through Photoshop. Besides that, I have learn how to sending message to audience with a limited frames of animation. Although the gif only got 6 frames, but it is enough to give a short storytelling to audience. Through this exercise, I also more used to the tools of Adobe Illustrator.

*Observation
I found that creativity is very important when we try to create an artwork especially when we has been limited in restricted by certain conditions. When I first know that we only can use 6 frames and we need to shows the decisive moment of the urban legend we choose, I was anxiety and I don't think that I can do it. But now I found that as long as we are enough creative, there is nothing that we cant.

*Findings
I have explore my new upper limit through this exercise. Like what I think before, I have create a better artwork compare to my previous exercise. I have learn a lot of things through this exercise. Not only the skills of using the Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop also the skills of story telling and create a illustration that follow the principle.
