    • Create a promotional poster for your work.

  • Final Project: Thematic Matte Painting (VFX)
    • Create a 2.5D matte painting with camera mapping.
    • Blend 3D geometry, 2D painting, and raw video footage, adding special effects for believability.

Project 1: Invisible Set Extension (Pre_Production)

At first, Mr. Kannan asked us to decide our inspiration movie and create a moodboard. Based on the research I do, I decide to choose Avatar 1 as the inspiration. Then I search for the picture on Pinterest to create moodboard so that I can have a rough idea of my composition.

After the moodboard has been decided, I proceed to the draft session. I use procreate to sketch and try to explore different composition. At first, I create 3 composition but based on the feedback that given by Mr. Kannan, I decide to explore more different composition. In the end, I have create 6 different composition.

Project 2: Invisible Set Extension

In this task, we have been tasked to do the photobashing based on the composition sketch that we done in project 1. Before I start the photobashing, I search for the picture that I need to use in the photobashing.

When the element needed is all collected, I proceed to photobashing by using Adobe Photoshop.

Final Project: Thematic Matte Painting

In this task, we need to animate the set extension that we done before by using AE especially using the camera of AE to make the video seems like 3D. The final output need to have 3 different angle and it can be around 10 sec to 15 sec.

Before I start to edit it in AE, I draw a storyboard first to plan how should I move my camera first.

Then I export the layer from PS file one by one so that I can adjust them in AE one by one to achieve the effect I want. After I import them into AE, I start to animate them.

REFLECTIONS

The digital matte painting project was an exciting yet challenging experience that pushed me to explore my creativity and technical skills. I enjoyed experimenting with different textures, colors, and lighting to create a scene that felt immersive and visually engaging. Throughout the process, I learned how to balance composition and depth, ensuring each element served its purpose in the overall piece. While there were moments of trial and error, especially in blending layers seamlessly, these challenges became valuable learning moments that improved my attention to detail and problem-solving skills.

Looking back, this project taught me the importance of planning and patience in digital art. Sketching out ideas beforehand helped guide my workflow and made the adjustments less overwhelming. The feedback I received was incredibly helpful, showing me how small changes could make a big difference in the final result. This experience has not only enhanced my technical abilities but also boosted my confidence in tackling complex projects in the future. It’s a journey I’m proud of and one that I feel has strengthened my foundation as a digital artist.
