     1. Lectures

    Week 3 - Storyboard

    What is Storyboard:

    - Storyboard is a graphic representation of a movie, cartoon, or video game in film making, analogous to a comic strip.

    - Utilize to discuss ideas with the production team, organize shots, and comprehend the narrative flow.

    - Observations about details including camera angles, speech, character movement, special effects, and sound effects.

    - This enables scene visualization and helps the director, cinematographer, and other crew members get ready for filming. Storyboard is a crucial phase in the pre-production process because it gives directors the chance to test out various visual strategies, spot possible issues, and make the required changes ahead of time, saving money and effort.

    * How to make a Storyboard:

⤷ Identify key scenes in the script

    - The best starting point is to break up the script or narrative you'll be  working on.

    - Draw attention to important plot points, action, setting, arcs, and other essential elements of the story.

⤷ Map out the key scenes

    - Give each of the scenes you found in the screenplay a number and a fitting title when you map them out.

    ⤷ Add images or sketches:

    - Put every situation into your own words. Brainstorming the visual elements of each beat in the story scape is known as "creative landscaping" in this technique.

⤷ Describe what happens in each frame:

    - Try to capture the sense of a moving sequence even though each frame is a still image.

    - Composition and Framing: Select the angles at which objects and characters will be framed in each shots

Transition: Consider the flow from one shot to the next. A coherent flow is produced via smooth transitions, yet dramatic effects can also be achieved with sudden changes.

    - Character Blocking: Confirm character positions and movements within each shot.

    - Emotion and Expression:  Define the characters' facial expressions, body language, and eyes sign and capture their emotions and reactions.

    - Annotations: Use additional notes or captions for things that can't be easily conveyed in the visuals.

    - Dynamic Action: To guarantee clarity in action situations, divide quick actions into a series of panels.

Week 4 - Stage of Film Production

What are the stages of film production:

→ Logistic need to be addressed (Rentals, props, costumes, set decorations, etc.)

        ~ Getting the team together:

→ Usually hire heads of departments, professionals such as cinematographerproduction designercostume designer, etc.

→ Lead actors may attached during development but now the rest of the cast need to be filled out. This is where a casting director comes into play. (who read the script, consult with the director and put together auditions for all the needed part)

        ~ Pre-visualizing:

→ Planning how the film looks like by making storyboard or writing out a shot list.

→ Consulting with production designer and meeting with the costume designer.

→ Location scouting, which accompanied by a tech scout, all the logistical considerations go into choosing a location. (How to transport location to the space, power sources, sound issued, sun rise and set)

    ⤷ Production:

        ~ The Call Sheet:

→ A document that tells each member of department what their call time and what should they planning to do for the day, sent out by assistant director.

Week 7 - Color Correction, Color Grading

Process of colorizing digital video footage:

    - Establishing a picture profile

    - Color-correcting the footage

    - Color-grading the footage

    What is color Correction :

    - A technical process aimed at making footage look as natural and realistic as possible.

    What is color Grading :

    - A creative process that adds atmosphere and emotion to footage.

    HSB :

    - The basic color terms used in color grading software and cameras are hue, saturation, and brightness (HSB).

    - Hue refers to the color itself.

    - Saturation refers to the intensity of the color. It is where the colors "pop" or become "muddy" depending on the amount of grey information in the color. Adding pure white or black to the color will result in a darker or lighter brightness value.

    - Brightness refers to the lightness or darkness of the color.

    - HSB color theory is used to create mood and color schemes in movies and videos.

    White Balance :

    - Refers to the color temperature at which white objects on film actually look white.

    Scope :

    - Scope is a monitoring tool that displays color and light information on a graph so that you can see the precise balance of these characteristics and how they compare to each other.

    Curves :

    - Precise color correction and color grading. Using curves, you can add points to drag colors to new values and change shadows, midtones, and highlights with more precision.

    Color Match :

    - Allows to choose a reference image that will then be analyzed and applied to your target image. However, this is an automatic calculation, so it is important to check your scopes and use your judgement as to the quality of the color match.

    Three-Way Corrector :

    - A useful tool for many colorists in professional entertainment, but they have their pros and cons.

    - Lets you balance the shadows, midtones, and highlights of an image using color wheels. You can set numerical values, or use the control drag point to set your value based on hue.

    Color Qualifier :

    - Can change a particular color, or range of colors, without changing the rest of the picture.

      QUIZ

      Week 4a : Production stages

      Week 4b : Production Crews

Week 7 : Colour Correction, Colour Grading

      INSTRUCTIONS

      Project 2A : Production Shoot

Before we start the shooting, Mr. Martin has give us a short briefing and divided us into three group so that we can do our production shoot in sequence. The film that we ask to remake are the Everything, Everywhere, All At Once.

To let our shooting can be proceed in an orderly manner, we have assign our work according to the crew list. In this shooting session I have been assign to as an actress. Below are our group crew list.

Here is the storyboard and video clip reference that provided by Mr. Martin.

      VSP Production Shoot 2024

Next, we follow the storyboard and the reference to took our shoots. After the shoots is done, Mr. Martin teach us how to do color correction and color grading. Mr. Martin asked us to apply the following color grade on our footage and try to edit it in a creative style.

Based on the seniors example that Mr. Martin given, I decided to edit the video as a trailer in a mystery way.

First, I cut the prefer parts of the clips, then I add on the caption and transitions to makes it present as what I want. Last, I do the color grading by following to the instruction of Mr. Martin. The picture below has shown one of the color grading in my video.

      Project 2B : Insta_Tiktok Video Treatment

In this tasks, Mr. Martin ask us to watch for the video online first, after that we need to decide the favorite type of video and create a simple moodboard. To let the moodboard more easy to understand, Mr. Martin ask us to complete the moodboard in the google slide that he given.

Below are the link of my proposal presentation in google slide.

      https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1uysk0ZTW7Whr8tthzAkIrSGsITz0d3VCeCO-kL8UiBs/edit?usp=sharing

After the proposal is approved by Mr. Martin, I start to shoot the clips in my home alone. Then I start my editing. First, I use AE to create the lighting so that the clips can have the lighting that I want.

Then, I use the roto brush tool in AE to cutout myself because the auto cutout of the CapCut cannot create the effect that I want.

After all the necessary clips has done the first step, I import them into CapCut and start to edit my video.

Then, I arrange the clips into the sequence that I want and add on some transitions and effect on it.

After that, I add on the background to let the video can achieve the style that I prefer. To let the clips and the background can be blend more naturally, I add on some diagram that I draw myself and also adjust the color of the clips.

Last, I add on the lyrics of the song.

      FEEDBACK

      Week 6 :

General Feedback : We need to use the camera crane to shoot the overhead shot.

Specific feedback : The stability is poor but can be adjust in the PR.

      Week 7 :

General Feedback : Edit the footage creatively.

Specific feedback : The Project 2B can be groups to helps each other shooting or do it individually.

      Week 8 :

General Feedback : The storyline looks ok.

Specific feedback : Can try to use AE to create the lighting that I want and also use the roto brush tools in AE to cutout the character because the auto cutout in CapCut is a bit poor.

      REFLECTIONS

          *Experience

During this tasks, I found that the shooting session are quite fun but the editing session is a bit tough to me especially in Project 2B. Due to the style that I want to follow in Project 2B are normally create by drawing so when I try to create the same style by editing the clips is a big challenge for me. I have spend a lot of time on trying how to cutout the character in a nice way and also how to blend the character and the background more naturally.

          *Observation

By following to the instructions of Mr. Martin, I have successfully settle the problems of cutout and lighting. Through this tasks, I found that I have gain more understanding about the editing and also how to use the AE and also CapCut.

          *Findings

Although this tasks has give me a lot of challenge but I still complete it successfully, I not very satisfied with the final outcome but that is the best that I can do for now. I will try to improve my skills on editing so that next time I can create a better outcome.
