Design Principle
Task 2

LECTURES
- Pre-recorded Lectures
* Visual Analysis:
- A critical part of visual literacy, a skill that helps people read and critically interpret images, whether in a museum, on social media, in entertainment, advertising, or the news.
- As citizens of the 21st century, we are constantly confronted with visual media. Practicing visual analysis sharpens critical judgment skills and helps people seek out answers instead of passively receiving information.
- Visual analysis work by three phases : Observation, Analysis, Interpretation
⤷Observation :
- Observation means closely looking at and identifying the visual elements of a design, trying to describe them carefully and accurately in your own words. Do not read beforehand about the design at all.
- The observation phase is about looking, thinking, and finding good language to communicate what you notice.
⤷Analysis :
- Analysis requires you to think about your observations and try to make statements about the work based on the evidence of your observations.
- Think about how the specific visual elements that you’ve identified combine to create design principles that complete that work of design/art, and the effects on the viewer.
- How are your eyes led through the work and why? Apply the design principles knowledge you have learnt.
⤷Interpretation :
- In this final phase, your observations, description, and analysis of the work are fused with facts about the design work (and in some cases the designer) and historical context that you find in trustworthy published sources.
- What is the meaning of the design? What was the purpose for it to be created?
Example of chosen design for visual analysis
Phase 1 : Observation (sample writing)
This design work is in portrait format. In the center, there is a face looking at the viewer. Surrounding the face
is a snake with its mouth open. At the bottom right, the person’s
hand is holding the snake. The image is surrounded by flowers with
some words at the top and numbers to the right. As for visual elements, the main colors observed are red, magenta, green and yellow. Overall, it
is a colorful design. There are swirly, organic lines applied
throughout the composition. The border is created by thick black lines. (93
words)
Phase 2 : Analysis (sample writing)
This design is symmetrically balanced. The emphasis is on the central image - the face of a woman - rendered in the
brightest hue, looking back at the viewer. She is holding a snake.
The snake’s coiling body (movement) leads one to read the words at the top, International Lille Tattoo Convention. The snake’s
fangs are close to her eyes, bringing the focus to her face. As one
pans across her face, one will be able to see 3 sets of
numbers aligned the right. A repetition of flowers and leaves is found from the middle to the bottom of the design. There is unity
in the overall composition as the objects are arranged in a
way that complement one another. There is proportion in the layout, creating hierarchy – first, we see the image in the biggest size, followed by the slightly smaller words. (144
words)
Phase 3 : Interpretation (sample writing)
This is a poster designed for a
tattoo convention in Paris, France, which was held from 17-19 January 2020. I find
the illustration style reflects that of Art Nouveau (Images A &B),
a historical European design style of the 19th century
(Bouillon, 1985). As Paris was one of the centers where Art
Nouveau flourished, it is apt that this style is incorporated into
this poster design because this tattoo convention was also held
in Paris. Besides cultural implications, tattoos are also a form
of art. This poster which is designed in a highly
decorative manner not only reflects the artistry of Art Nouveau
but reminds one of the artistic freedom of the times. (113 words)

INSTRUCTIONS
In this task, we have been ask to :
- Write a 300 to 350 word visual analysis of the selected design.
Task 2: Visual Analysis
As a continuation of Task 1, I wrote a visual analysis based on the sculpture I selected in Task 1. As a reminder, the UNSDG that I choose is the 14th goals which is "Life Below Water" and it aims to conserve and sustainably use life below water.
Title of Design : Humpback Whale Tail (Washed Ashore Project)
Designer's Name : Angela Haseltine Pozzi
Size : 2.7 meter tall
Medium : Plastic waste and trash collected from the oceans

Visual Analysis
Phase 1 : Observation
The design I choose is one of the sculpture under the project "Washed Ashore Project" which create by Angela Haseltine Pozzi. This sculpture named Humpback Whale Tail and it got 2.7 meter tall. It is one of the sculpture under the project Washed Ashore : Art to Save the Sea. As shown as picture above, this sculpture are made by waste and plastics that collect from the sea. Whole sculpture only got three color which is black, white and blue be the only hue color in this sculpture. The Black color has occupies most of the area compare to the white part.
(102 word)
Phase 2 : Analysis
This sculpture has follow the law of symmetry which is vertical symmetrical balanced. For example, the left side and the right side tail of the whale are the same, not only the size or area of the color also the waste that on the tail such as the tyre on the top of the tail.
Besides of that, this sculpture also achieve the form and actual texture because its is a real sculpture not a painting and it create by different tiny waste. The proportion of the black color and white color has cause the emphasis on the whale although the blue color 'sea' are also attractive. This sculpture has use variety of different type of waste to avoid monotony.
(119 word)
Phase 3 : Interpretation

Three different sculpture that under the Washed Ashore Project, Angela Haseltine Pozzi
Picture above has shown three different sculpture that under the same project which called Washed Ashore : Art to Save the Sea, create by Angela Haseltine Pozzi. Her artwork create by plastic and waste that collect from the sea and she transform them into thought-provoking representations of marine life. Pozzi tries to portray the diversity of ocean trash in her many sculptures while alluding to other ocean problems. (Smithsonian Ocean) Therefore, Her artworks are all aims to inspiring people from diverse backgrounds to take action on prevent contributing to this global problem.
Besides that, artwork of Angela Haseltine Pozzi has follow to the Modern Realism style. Realism is a type style that applied to painting or sculpture created, it widely regarded as the beginning of the modern art movement due to the push to incorporate modern life and art together, it emerged in France in the 1840s, around the 1848 Revolution. FEEDBACK
Week 4 :
General Feedback : Absent, due to attend the trip of intercultural that go to Japan.
Specific feedback : Absent, due to attend the trip of intercultural that go to Japan.
General feedback : Overall is good.
REFLECTION
During this tasks, I have learn about how to analysis an artwork from different aspect. Besides that I also learn how to apply the design principle on an artwork. From my opinion, when we know how to analysis an artwork and know what the design principle that artwork apply that mean we can apply the design principle on our own artworks and we can create a better design.
*Observation
Not every design principle can be found in a good artwork but a good artwork must contained some design principle in it. Besides of the design principle, the message that we try to convey to audience is also important, we should pay attention on it.
We should try to apply the design principle on our artworks and convey the good messages to audience. Besides that we should try to appreciate more different artwork and try to analysis the artwork so that we can got more idea on how to create a good design.
