Task 3: Exercise - Type Design and Communication
Sketches
Sketches 1
This sketches is used to do research on different types of pen act on the same
font. After I done this sketches, I have choose two prefer sketches which is
the 2nd sketches of Calligraphy Pen 4.0 and the 3rd sketches of Brush Sign
Pen. From the feedback that given by MS. Hsin, I have choose the 3rd sketches
of Brush Sign Pen to do one more sketches on different letters.
Sketches 2
This the sketches about different letters that follow to the sketches that I choose in Sketches 1. I will do my digitization by follow to this sketches.
Detail Dissection
Letter Dissection
Before I start to digitizing my sketch, I have choose Adobe Caslon Pro
Regular to do an observation. During this progress, I found that the width
of the stroke of all letter is same but it become thicker a little bit when
it curve. The serif of the letter 'H' is same length to each other and also
the stem but a b it thinner. Therefore, I found that all the strokes should
same or similar to each other to archive unity.
Digitization
Before I start to digitize, set my guidelines for the baseline,
x-height, ascenders, descenders and also the cap height to make sure all
letters can be in the same size.
digitization progress #1
This is the first set of letters that without any customizations, After
getting feedback from Ms. Hsin, I start to customize it, I try to make it
rounded a little bit.
This is the versions that after i customize. Based on the feedback from Ms.
Hsin, I have do a little bit adjusting on the letter 'C', "G' and also letter
'S' again.
Typeface Final
And here is my typeface final outcome. After this I start to develop my font
by using FontLab.
FontLab Process #1
FontLab Process #2
First, I transfer my font from Adobe Illustrator to FontLab one by one.
After that, I start to adjust the kerning of my font to make sure it can
archive the effect I want. When all the process done, I export my font and
name it as 'Svelte Rounded' and install it on my laptop.
FontLab Process #3
Last, I test my font on Adobe Illustrator to make sure it have archive what
I want.
Poster
Poster Outcome
This is the poster that I make by using Svelte Rounded. I duplicate the word
'SHINE' and blur it to make it looks like shining so that it can match to
the meaning of the word.

FEEDBACK
Week 8 :
General Feedback : Independent study week so do not have
feedback.
Specific feedback : Independent study week so do not have
feedback.
Week 9 :
General Feedback : Overall look nice.
Specific feedback : The 3rd sketches of Brush Sign Pen is
better, can start digitization and make sure each font is bend at the same
angle to archive unity.
Week 10 :
General Feedback : Make sure watch all the videos that given by Mr.
Vinod before start doing the task.
Specific feedback : The digitization overalls looks good but the
medium of letter 'G' is too low, need to do some adjusting on it. Try to
make letter 'S' more curvy. Letter 'D' is too slim, try to make it fat a
bit.
Week 11 :
General Feedback : Try to maintain all the radians of the
letters to make sure it looks neat.
Specific feedback : The letter 'C' looks like the symbol
omega, try to make it more curvy. Stroke of letter 'N' can adjust a little
bit. "H' is too narrow, try to make it wide.
Week 12 :
General Feedback : Make sure the letter is expanded become
path not only stroke before transfer the letter to font lab.
Specific feedback : Letter 'C' and letter 'S' still need to
adjust a little bit, after that can transfer the letter to font lab and
create the poster.
Week 13 :
General Feedback : The poster should try to avoid graphic
element.
Specific feedback : Looks nice, complete the e-portfolio.
REFLECTION
*Experience
During this tasks, I found that when we start to
design an own typefaces, we need to have enough basic knowledge of
typography especially part of anatomy to make sure we can create a
typefaces that can be satisfied. When I do the sketch, I did not
know that we can do whatever typefaces that we want, so I have
choose to create a typefaces that is reference from Adobe Caslon
Pro. When I know about this I already start digitizing, so my
typefaces is similar to Adobe Caslon Pro. But after I found that I
have try to customize it to make it more unique. Although I doing
my typefaces by reference the Adobe Caslon Pro, I still faces a
hard challenge on how to adjust the curvature of letter and how to
make the oath looks silkier. Fortunately, I have solved these
problems with the help of Ms. Hsin.
*Observation
Each part of letters can make a huge difference
on the typefaces, even though we only adjust a little bit. All
of them has decided the emotion that this typefaces want to
shows. Not only the strokes, stem, serif and et cetera, the
kerning also important to the typefaces.
*Findings
Different typefaces
can convey different emotion to audience. Therefore, when we try to create a
poster or anything else as long as we need to use words on it, we should
choose the suitable typefaces to make sure this artworks can convey the
message we want to audience.
FURTHER READING
Typographic design: Form and communication (2015)
Based on the suggested book that given by Mr. Vinod, I have choose this
book as my weekly further reading.
Chapter 2 : The Anatomy of Typography, Letterforms analyzed (Pg 32)
Because of the task 3 need us to design a typefaces so I have choose Chapter
2 to read so that I can have more knowledge of Anatomy. In this section I
have learn that the writing materials will affect to our typefaces although
the ways we write is same. Besides that letter can be extracted from the
structure. Lastly, the most important things when we create a typefaces is
set a baseline, meanline, capline, beard line and x-height before we start
to digitize it.
Chapter 2 : The Anatomy of Typography, The typographic font (Pg 35)
In this section I have learned that what character that should include in
a complete font. Besides that, i also learn the optical relationships
within a font and the point that we should pay attention when we create a
font. Lastly, the unity of design in the type font is very important, all
well-designed type fonts display the principle of repetition with variety.
Chapter 2 : The Anatomy of Typography, Historical classification of
typefaces (Pg 38)
In this section i have learned that the different style of symbol and
also the difference of the fonts when the components has been adjust, the
component for example like serifs, weight, width, posture and et cetera.
Chapter 2 : The Anatomy of Typography, Typographic measurement (Pg 42)
In this section, I have learned that the measurement system for typography
got two, which is metal type measurement and spatial measurement. The size
of the font and kerning also affect the readability and feelings of audience
when they read the word.
Chapter 2 : The Anatomy of Typography, The type family (Pg 45)
In this section I learned that what is type family and also what
aspect can be change form the parent font when we want to create an type
family. There is four aspect that can be change which is weight, proportion,
angle and elaboration.
Chapter 2 : The Anatomy of Typography, Basic principles of legibility
(Pg 50)
This chapter has approaches legibility as an art of spatial synthesis. I
have learn distinguishing characteristic of letters, nature of word,
difference between capital letter and lowercase letter and also
interletter and interword spacing. Besides that, type size, line length
and interline spacing also act a serious part in spatial harmony and
legibility.
